My Pick of Interior Design Books – What’s on your bookshelf??

There’s is no doubt one of my big loves is interior design, but I do also love books.
I thank my parents for that, they have always been avid readers and always actively encouraged my sister and I to read too.

So it’s no surprise that I have a growing collection of interior design books at home.

The first interior design book I bought was a Pottery Barn book. Let me tell you I loved this book (still has a place on my book shelf). Although we did not have Pottery Barn shops in England, I still used to imagine my home (once I moved out from the family home) styled like one of the pictures in this book. When I look at it now, it does look a bit dated, but I am still very attached to it.

And that sometimes can be a problem with buying interior design books, “How long will the designs stay relevant??” Like most things, interiors have trends, whether you like it or not, styles change. So a book that was full of the latest looks today, may have the looks people want five or more years later.

Having said that, there are some books that I turn to time and time again for inspiration, and not just for the amazing photos of interiors they contain but also because of the tips and information they carry in the text. The information provided in these books would apply to all interiors and would stay useful even in the years to come.

So here are my top picks:

Styled by Emily Henderson

What’s not to love about this lady’s work, she just nails it every time. Mixing old with the new to create homes that are personal to the owners. And the book is just amazing, yes the pictures are gorgeous but the information on types of styles (there’s a handy style quiz to help you chose your style) is invaluable. This is a must have in my opinion.

Kevin McCloud’s Principles of Home – Making a Place to Live

Of course Kevin made it on the list. This book (of which I have many by Kevin McCloud) is the conscience book. Whilst the others on the list are about styling and aesthetics of the home, this book focus on how we can create responsible homes that are sustainable, environmentally friendly and that are of quality. A real antidote to the throw away culture.

Domino – Your Guide to a Stylish Home

I have two of the books by the Domino team. Both are beautiful books. This particular book covers everything and I do mean everything, you need to know about styling your home. The amount of information is this book is staggering, from lighting to wallpaper, furniture and art and how to use these elements to get the home you have always dreamed off.

This is by no means all my books, but they are the ones that provide the best ideas and tips to getting your home to look like a professional came in and waved their magic styling wand. There a gazillion books out there, full of photos and ideas, buying them can become a expensive habit.

Take a look at these as a good starting point and see how you go.

Got a favourite book, then share I would love to hear your picks.
